The new aspect of my job-- previously to carry cameras around and tape talentless cover bands-- is that I am the defacto graphic designer for Seacrets1. Maintaining said job (which currently promises to consistently provide 40 hours a week) is, in my mind, requiring me to bone up on my skills. So, Tuesday being my day off, what do I do late, late, late into the night Monday? I work on an ad, of course. Actually the evening began with an attempt at tooling around in Adobe Illustrator 10 (*koff*pirated*koff*), but that didn't fly. Then I opted to challenge myself to make the next Darkside/Lunasea party2 ad something different. Here's a look, click on the image for a larger view. For the record, you might notice a lack of anything towards the bottom-- that's because I don't have the prefabricated Seacrets logo, address, phone number and website graphic I've made and have already used and, if this particular ad were approved, could easily pop it in at work.
One reason I worked on this at home is because, fundamentally, it's a "concept ad" with the fake newspaper. 80% of the three or four hours I worked on this ad was coming up with that fake newspaper. Now, chances are, if I brought this ad to my boss, the owner, I'd be willing to bet that if there were one thing he'd want removed, it'd be the newspaper bit, to possibly be replaced with a DJ Tuff picture. Either way, the newspaper bit was a learning experience and I think it turned out better than I'd expected. You need a fake newspaper? I'm your man.
1. Seacrets is an enormous and by far the largest nightclub/bar/restaurant in Ocean City, MD or, conceivably, this portion of the United States going all the way down to Florida.
2. Lunasea/Darkside parties are nights promoted to fall when the moon is full and when the moon is... well, the other one, respectively. The club uses UV cannons, purple or blue shades, and black lights to make the experience odd and dark and, occasionally, unreal. When Lunaseas aren't done well, you question why they go through all the trouble -- when everything goes right, it's a change-up to the club's atmosphere that can be quite exciting.
